Tutorial: Build a Moodboard
In this hands-on tutorial, you'll create a moodboard to organize your creative references. This is typically the first step in any video project.
What you'll build
- A collection of reference images organized on the canvas
- Text labels explaining your creative choices
- Grouped sections that you can move together
Prerequisites
- Completed the Quickstart
- 5-6 reference images (files or URLs)
Part 1: Set up your project
- From the Projects dashboard, click New Project
- You'll land on an empty canvas in Pre-Production mode
- Zoom to a comfortable level (scroll or pinch)
Part 2: Add your reference images
- Drag your first image onto the canvas
- Position it in the top-left area
- Repeat for the remaining images, placing them roughly where you want them
Multiple files
You can drag multiple files at once. They'll all be added to the canvas.
Part 3: Organize into a grid
- Click an image to select it
- Drag the corner handles to resize (hold Shift to keep proportions)
- Use the alignment guides that appear to line up with other assets
- Arrange your images into rows with consistent spacing
Part 4: Add labels
- Double-click on an empty area below your first image
- Type a short label like "Color palette" or "Lighting reference"
- Repeat for other images that need explanation
Part 5: Group related items
- Click and drag to select multiple assets (images and their labels)
- Right-click and choose Group, or use
Cmd/Ctrl + G - Now you can move the entire section as one unit
To ungroup later, select the group and use Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + G.
Part 6: Add a title
- Double-click at the top of your canvas
- Type a title for your moodboard (e.g., "Visual Direction - Project X")
- Select the text and make it larger using the formatting options
Done!
You've built a moodboard that organizes your creative vision. This canvas will serve as reference material as you move into storyboarding and production.
