Use Comments and Threads
Comment threads let you have focused discussions about specific parts of your project. Attach comments directly to canvas elements to keep feedback organized and contextual.
Creating Comment Threads
Start a new thread:
- Right-click any empty area of the canvas
- Select "Add Comment" from the context menu
- Position the comment where it makes sense visually
- Write your first message to start the discussion
The comment thread appears as a circular icon that shows:
- Avatar stack of people who've participated
- Colored border indicating activity
- Smooth scaling that adjusts to your zoom level
Writing Comments
Add to the discussion:
- Click the comment thread icon to open it
- Type your message in the text field at the bottom
- Press Enter or click Send to post
Your comments include:
- Your profile picture and name
- Timestamp showing when you wrote it
- Full message content with any formatting
💡 Tip: Keep comments specific to the visual element they're attached to. This makes it easier for teammates to understand the context of your feedback.
Managing Messages
Edit or delete your own messages:
- Three-dot menu appears on your messages
- Edit to fix typos or clarify points
- Delete to remove messages that are no longer relevant
Thread actions:
- Mark as resolved when the discussion is complete
- Delete entire thread if it's no longer needed (removes all messages)
Thread Notifications
Comments update in real-time for your team:
- New messages appear immediately for all team members
- Activity indicators show when someone is typing
- Thread icons update to reflect who's participated
Visual Organization
Comment threads help organize feedback visually:
- Position threads near the elements you're discussing
- Thread icons scale with your zoom level so they stay visible
- Avatar stack grows to show all participants
Thread appearance:
- Circular icon with team member avatars
- Positioned precisely where you placed it on the canvas
- Persistent location that stays consistent across sessions
Thread Lifecycle
Active discussions:
- New threads appear bright and prominent
- Recent activity keeps threads visually active
- Multiple participants create larger avatar stacks
Resolved threads:
- Mark threads as resolved when discussions conclude
- Resolved threads become less prominent visually
- Content remains accessible if you need to reference it later
Best Practices
For effective feedback:
- Be specific about what element or area you're discussing
- Use clear language that teammates can act on
- Reference specific changes rather than general comments
- Respond promptly to keep discussions moving
For thread organization:
- Position thoughtfully — place threads near relevant content
- Group related discussions by placing threads close together
- Clean up regularly by resolving completed discussions
- Archive old threads that are no longer relevant
💡 How Mito teams use this: During design reviews, we place comment threads directly on elements that need changes. Each thread becomes a mini discussion about that specific part of the design, making it easy to track what's been addressed.
Collaboration Flow
Typical comment workflow:
- Reviewer adds thread with feedback or question
- Creator responds with clarification or proposed changes
- Discussion continues until everyone agrees on the approach
- Thread marked resolved once changes are implemented
Multi-person discussions:
- Anyone can join an existing thread
- All participants see real-time updates
- Thread grows to show all contributors
Threading vs. Other Communication
Use comment threads when:
- Feedback is about specific visual elements
- You want discussion to stay with the project
- Context matters for understanding the feedback
- Multiple people need to weigh in on specific details
Use other communication when:
- Discussing overall project direction
- Coordinating schedules or deadlines
- Sharing resources or external links
- Having broader creative discussions
Troubleshooting
Can't see new messages?
- Check if you're still connected (look at the avatar stack)
- Refresh if messages seem delayed
- Make sure the thread is still open
Thread icon disappeared?
- Zoom out to see if it's outside your current view
- Check if someone deleted the thread
- Look for resolved threads that might be less visible
Comments not saving?
- Check your internet connection
- Try typing the message again
- Refresh the page if problems persist
Thread Limitations
- No file attachments — use external links for reference materials
- Text only — no rich formatting or embedded media
- Project-specific — threads don't move between projects
